Peter Gumbel covers European business and economic affairs for both TIME and Fortune. He has been based in Paris since 2003, first as a senior writer for TIME and, since 2007, also for Fortune.
A journalist and foreign correspondent for more than 20 years, Gumbel spent 16 years at the Wall Street Journal prior to joining TIME, working in New York, Moscow, Paris, Berlin, and Los Angeles, where he served as the paper's bureau chief for four years.
While in Moscow, Gumbel covered the rise and fall of President Gorbachev and the subsequent collapse of the Soviet Union, earning him two awards from the Overseas Press Club of America. Gumbel has also won several other prestigious journalism awards, including being named Journalist of the Year by the London-based Work Foundation.
Gumbel's book on France, French Vertigo, which was published in November 2006, was written in French and proved to be hugely popular with readers.
Aside from his achievements as a journalist and author, Gumbel has also taught at Science Po's graduate school of journalism in Paris.
