Bill Saporito is assistant managing editor of TIME, a role in which he directs TIME's coverage of business, the economy, personal finance and sports. An 18-year Time Inc. veteran, Saporito joined TIME in 1996 as a senior editor.
Most recently, Saporito has directed TIME's extensive coverage of the global financial crisis, writing and editing stories about the stock market, investing, the mortgage industry, the real estate bust, bank bailouts and the U.S. auto industry.
During his tenure at TIME, Saporito has also been heavily involved in the magazine and website's sportswriting. He profiled Bode Miller for a cover in 2006 and has written profiles of Tiger Woods and Dale Earnhardt. Additionally, Saporito directed TIME's coverage of the 2000 Olympics in Sydney and the 2002 Games in Salt Lake City.
Saporito served as the top editor of TIME's "Builders and Titans" issue, which named the 20 most influential business people of the past 100 years. That issue was one of six produced for the "TIME 100: People of the Century" series (1999). He has also overseen the production of two "Person of the Year" editions.
Previously, Saporito was a senior editor at Fortune magazine, where he was a member of the publication's Board of Editors. He began his career at the New York Daily News.
Saporito received a B.A. from Bucknell University and an M.A. from Syracuse University. He and his wife, Laurie, live in Manhattan.
